Bio

Derrick Smith, a former Deputy Director of Accounting Revenue at the Illinois Secretary of State has been a dedicated public servant for the last thirty years. Derrick was introduced to politics and public service at a young age by his father, the late Mr. Hayes Smith Sr., a precinct captain of the old 42nd Ward (currently the 27th Ward).

Democratic Candidate Smith’s political leadership experience entails thirty years as a Precinct Captain Coordinator, logging thousands of volunteer hours on city, county, state, and federal election campaigns,and a former member of the Young Democrats of Cook County (YDCC).

Throughout his journey of public service, Derrick has unselfishly given his time and dedication to social service organizations that benefit the children and adults alike in the community. He has volunteered for organizations such as- The Neighborhood United Organization, Soles for the Needy, Major Adams Community Committee, The Austin Coalition on Under aged Drinking, 100 Men Plus, and even as a basketball coach for Franklin Elementary School. On a different scale Derrick has volunteered his efforts to help several disaster relief projects for the Red Cross Disaster Services, The Haiti Relief Project, and the Salvation Army.

In 2003, Derrick earned his Associates Degree in Liberal Arts from Malcolm X Junior College in Chicago and a Bachelor’s Degree in 2005 from DePaul University. He is a member of the St. John’s Grand Masonic Lodge, a Trustee at Union Missionary Baptist Church, and a Shriner.

A native of Chicago, candidate Smith attended Franklin Elementary School (Class of 1977) and St. Benedict High School (Class of 1981). A father of three and proud grandfather of six, candidate Smith currently resides in the East Garfield neighborhood of Chicago. His future goals include pursuing a Doctorate degree, teaching, and traveling the world with the United Nations (UN) to develop programs that benefit the citizens of underprivileged countries.
