Bio

Bert Johnson was born and raised in Detroit, MI. He attended U of D Jesuit and U of D-Mercy. A current resident of Highland Park, he is in his first term as a state senator, representing the 2nd District, which includes Highland Park, Hamtramck, northeast Detroit, Harper Woods and all five Grosse Pointe Communities.

Prior to being elected to the Senate, he served two terms as a State Representative, replacing his term-limited former boss, Bill McConico, whom he served as Chief of Staff for five years.

This year, Senator Johnson was selected to sit on the Appropriations Committee and was assigned the position of Minority Vice-Chair of the DELEG, General Government and Judiciary subcommittees. He also sits on the Redistricting Committee and serves as Minority Vice-Chair of the Regulatory Reform Committee.

Two of his signature issues are education reform and regional mass transit and he has worked extensively on creating smart, common-sense consumer protections and encouraging economic development through creative incentives in tax policy.

He is a member of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, the Mt. Pavan #2 Prince Hall Lodge, the Highland Park Men’s Forum and Optimist’s Club and serves as Treasurer of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus.
