BioOccupation- Attorney. Education- Louisiana State University, B.A., South Texas School of Law, J.D. Legislative Experience- Senate Member, December 2008 - present. Hometown- Houston. Party- Republican. Senator Joan Huffman's tenure in the Texas Senate has been characterized by strong conservative leadership on criminal justice, fiscal responsibility, economic development and crucial issues impacting children's health and education. Huffman was elected in 2008 and has been re-elected twice. She represents District 17, which comprises Brazoria, Fort Bend and Harris counties. Prior to becoming a senator, Huffman spent nearly 14 years as a prosecutor and six years as an elected judge. Such experience made her a natural choice for vice chairwoman of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee. Huffman is also a member of the Finance, State Affairs and Health and Human Services Committees. In addition, she serves as chairwoman of the Senate Republican Caucus. Reflecting her commitment to law and order, Huffman has successfully championed numerous bills strengthening the criminal justice system and protecting children from sexual assault and abuse. As a member of the Sunset Advisory Commission, she has made tough decisions to reduce government inefficiencies and save taxpayer dollars. In addition to all her other duties, Huffman is an appointed Ex-Officio member of the Governor's Criminal Justice Advisory Council. It advises Governor Perry on the operations and performance of specialty courts to ensure the rights of participants are protected. For her voting record last session, Huffman was named "Taxpayer Champion" with an A+ rating from Texans for Fiscal Responsibility. She was the only Texas Senator to receive the "Law and Order" award from the Texas District and County Attorneys Association, which praised her leadership and service on the Criminal Justice Committee. The senator has also been recognized as a "Fighter for Free Enterprise" by the Texas Association of Business, the Harris County Medical Society's "Patient Care Champion," and she received the top award from Texans for Lawsuit Reform for advancing tort reform. A graduate of Louisiana State University, Huffman began her distinguished career in public service with the Harris County District Attorney's Office. Inspired by the work of prosecutors, Huffman took night classes at South Texas School of Law while working as a legal intern and secretary. Ultimately, she was hired as a prosecutor and advanced from misdemeanor court to Chief Felony Prosecutor, Special Crimes Gang Prosecutor, and Legal Counsel to the Organized Crime Narcotics Task Force. Huffman served as lead prosecutor in more than 100 jury trials, including murders, sexual assaults, aggravated robberies, and sexual assaults of children. She went on to become twice-elected 183rd Criminal District Court Judge. Senator Huffman lives with her family in Houston. She continues to serve her constituents and all of Texas as a committed conservative with an independent voice they can trust.
