Bio

Silvana Tabares is serving her first term as State Representative of the 21st District, which includes portions of Bedford Park, Cicero, Forest View, Lyons, McCook, Riverside, Stickney and Summit. It also includes the Chicago neighborhoods of Archer Heights, Brighton Park, Garfield Ridge, Lower West Side, McKinley Park and South Lawndale. Silvana earned an associate's degree from Richard J. Daley College and a bachelor's degree from Columbia College Chicago. She then started her career in public service by working as a youth educator for WRTE Radio Arte 90.5 FM. After working as a youth educator, Silvana began working as the managing editor of EXTRA Bilingual Newspaper. Under her leadership and direction, the newspaper received numerous awards. As a managing editor, Silvana used the newspaper's platform to increase awareness on issues important to the community, such as public safety, jobs and education. As a state legislator, Silvana's priorities include fighting to keep our neighborhoods safe from violence and crime, including implementing common sense measures to better prevent gun violence. As the first member of her family to attend college, Silvana understands the importance of education and making sure our children have access to the best schools and teachers. She supports efforts to increase students' time in the classroom and will work with parents and educators to make sure our kids are given the tools they need to succeed. To help stimulate the economy of our neighborhoods and to help create more job opportunities for local residents, Silvana will work to ensure state government is living within its means and passing responsible budgets, and she will work with employers to develop laws that encourage positive growth. Silvana was raised on the Southwest Side of Chicago in the neighborhood of Brighton Park by her single mother who taught her the meaning of hard work. Silvana now resides in Garfield Ridge.
