For more than 25 years, Jay has served on numerous boards and committees in the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce, the Western Piedmont Council of Governments, and the City of Hickory. These committes have provided Jay with hands on experience dealing with the issues that directly lead to economic development- transportation, land use, air quality, water quality, and government affairs.

As a small business owner, he understands the importance of cutting red tape and unnecessary regulations so businesses can succeed and create new jobs.

As a commercial real estate broker, he understands what it takes to convince businesses and industries to move to our area, bringing good jobs with them.

Jay graduated from The Citadel with a Bachelor of Science in Education, he has a unique grasp of the critical role our schools will play in the future of the 96th District. Education will be an extremely important component of Catawba County's future as well as North Carolina. "Excellence in Education" is absolutely essential. It should be noted that during the difficult years in the late 70's and early 80's Jay attended CVCC to study mechanical drawing, computer science and real estate. His study of real estate at CVCC earned him his license in 1983 and lead to a successful career in commercial real estate.

A strong defender of second amendment rights, Jay is a longtime member, officer, and former president of the Catawba Valley Wildlife Club. He is also a lifetime member of the NRA and was a founding board member of Grass Roots North Carolina.

He presently serves on the Board of the Peaks to Piedmont Girl Scout Council and is a member of the Elks Club.

He and his wife, Donna, have been a members of the First Baptist Church in Hickory since 1987. Their daughter Elizabeth graduated from N.C. State University in 2013 and now lives and works in Raleigh. Their son James is a senior at Hickory Christian Academy and is president of the student body, an Eagle Scout, and a candidate for the Naval and Air Force academies.
