Occupation- Advertising Executive. Education- Pan American University, B.S. Education. Legislative Experience- House Member, 1986 - 1990; Senate Member, 1991 - present. Hometown- Brownsville. Party- Democrat. Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr., a native of Brownsville, began his public service in 1971, becoming Cameron County Treasurer and later Cameron County Commissioner. In addition to his Senate Committee assignments, Senator Lucio serves on the Texas Legislative Council, he created and sits on the Interagency Task Force on Children with Special Needs and serves as chair of the Texas Tourism Caucus. He also represents Texas on a number of national committees. In 2003, Senator Lucio was honored by his colleagues when they elected him President Pro Tempore of the Senate for 78th Legislature. During his career, Senator Lucio's priorities have focused on public and higher education; economic development; access to quality health care; and the needs of children, the elderly, and those with special needs. Senator Lucio has passed hundreds of bills, including those creating the University of Texas Health Science Center-South Texas, a life without parole option in capital murder cases, water and waste-water funding for colonias, and self-help programs enabling aspiring home owners to invest sweat equity in the construction of their own homes. His commitment to families and children has resulted in expanded health coverage for children with autism, installing three-point seat belts on new school buses, improving nutrition in schools, and protecting and enhancing health care benefits for families of peace officers killed in the line of duty.
