Course Description
Teaching begins before the teacher steps into the classroom. Prior to each lesson or unit, effective teachers identify what students need to know, understand, and do, using the curriculum standards. Effective teachers collaboratively determine how mastery of the standards will be assessed prior to planning the lessons. Teachers then collaboratively plan content of instruction, select teaching materials, design learning activities, decide on pacing, and identify learning opportunities for students.

Effective instructional planning requires teachers to have a deep understanding of the curriculum as well as student learning data to inform planning. There are three key questions that need to be considered when planning:
1) What should be taught?
2) How should it be taught
3) How should learning be assessed?

In this session, participants will be engaged in:
1)   Planning specific learning activities (the main body of the lesson).
2)   Preparing several different ways of explaining the material (real-life examples, analogies, visuals, etc.) to catch the attention of more students and appeal to different learning styles.
3)   Identifying and using key elements of an effective lesson plan
4)   Networking with new and veteran colleagues to share teaching ideas and strategies.
5)   Reviewing ELA and Math standards (Identifying the Big Ideas and DOK levels).
6)   Ensuring that tasks are created and aligned to the DOK level and the standard.
7)   Examining work stations for research based components and alignment with the standards.
8)   Utilizing small group interventions that can be incorporated into the RTI process.

Target Audience:  6-8 Grade ELA Teachers and Instructional Facilitators
