Course Description

FAL involves change in the typical Math classroom culture with teachers and students moving into rather different roles. Students take more responsibility for their own work, engage in productive struggle, and study fewer tasks, but in greater depth. The teacher's role is to prompt students to reflect and reason through ideas, and to use questioning to support students through processes in obtaining depth of knowledge. Along with FAL you will also experience 3 ACT and Exemplar tasks.

This course will help math teachers develop the necessary skills to address the following TKES Performance Standards:

Standard 3: Instructional Strategies: The teacher promotes student learning by using research-based instructional strategies relevant to the content to engage students in active learning and to facilitate the students’ acquisition of key knowledge and skills.

Standard 4: Differentiated Instruction: The teacher challenges and supports each student’s learning by providing appropriate content and developing skills which address individual learning differences.

Standard 5: Assessment Strategies: The teacher systematically chooses a variety of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment strategies and instruments that are valid and appropriate for the content and student population.
