Course Description

This professional learning workshop is part of a series that provides participants with the opportunity to engage in deepening their knowledge of critical mathematics of the grade levels as learners in order to make sense of that mathematics for teaching. This workshop is intended to support content teachers, co-teachers and teacher leaders in situating this knowledge within learning progressions, classrooms, and the TQE (tasks, questioning, and evidence) process. Participants may register for the entire series OR the sessions they choose.

September 11, 2018  Topic of the Day: Sense Making, Fractions, Geometric Properties

October 9, 2018        Topic of the Day: Number Systems, Ratio, Proportional Relationships and Algebra

January 15, 2019      Topic of the Day: Statistics, Probability, and Geometric Decomposition

Time: 9:00am-3:00pm

Targeted Domains: Fractions, Ratios and Proportional Reasoning, Algebra, Statistics and Probability, Geometry

Additional topics to be addressed in the series:

  • NCTM’s Principles to Actions teaching practices
  • Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Selecting, adapting, or creating worthwhile tasks to address a specific learning goal
  • Using targeted and appropriate questioning strategies to support all learners
  • Collecting evidence of students’ conceptual understanding and misconceptions related to the learning goal.
  • Incorporating writing in the math class
  • Classroom videos of students demonstrating reasoning and sense making
  • Strategies for planning instruction for struggling/at risk students
  • Creating a shared vision for ensuring reasoning and sense making in classrooms
  • Using manipulatives to support students in reasoning and sense making

Each participant will receive a copy of the Making Sense of Mathematics for Teaching 6-8 book.

Target Audience: Any teacher wanting to increase the rigor and sense making in their classes
