Course Description

Middle School Writing Centers: The Writing Thief

Using Mentor Texts to Teach the Craft of Writing

 

From the work of “Ruth Culham”, a major part of good writing instruction is finding the right mentor texts to share with students. Within this PL, you’ll discover more than ninety excellent mentor texts, along with straightforward activities that incorporate the traits of writing across informational, narrative, and argument modes.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Using Mentor Texts to Spur Authentic Student Writing.
  • The 4Ws of Writing: Writing Process, Writing Traits, Writing Workshop, and Writing Modes.
  • GSE: Use mentor texts and the GSE to plan and guide your instruction.
  • Components of a Successful Writer's Workshop & Writing Centers: Revising Student Writing in Meaningful Ways
  • Classroom management during writing centers.
  • Mini lesson basics: Explicitly teach students how to read a book as writers.
  • Effective conferring and small-group work.
  • Grouping Mentor Texts in Clusters to Show a Diverse Range of Topics, Styles, and Approaches.
  • Building your own units of study (Please bring a lesson plan with a text that you will be using for writing).

If you choose DISTRICT/SYSTEM PAY as your payment method, the district must submit a system check to pay for the class. Please make payable to Oconee RESA and send to address below.

Withdrawal/Cancellation Policy
Notification of cancellation for any course must be received prior to the registration deadline. Registration fees are refundable only if cancellation is received before the registration deadline. Withdrawals/Cancellations received after the registration deadline will not be accepted and fees will not be refundable.
