Course Description

K-5 Endorsement Course 1

This course focuses on content-specific pedagogy and instructional strategies. This course focuses on preparing K-5 Mathematics Endorsement candidates to:
• Extend and refine knowledge and skills in using exemplary pedagogical practices, including unit and lesson planning.
• Incorporate collaboration, critical thinking, hands-on exploration, manipulative use, problem-based inquiry, technology utilization, and activity implementation addressing various learning styles and multiple intelligences into mathematics instruction.
• Select and use a variety of formative and summative assessment techniques to monitor student progress, gauge students' mathematical understanding, and interpret school-based progress.
• Solve problems using multiple strategies, manipulatives, and technological tools; interpret solutions; and determine reasonableness of answers and efficiency of methods.
• Understand and use the major concepts of number and operations in mathematics for grades K-5.

 

Admissions Requirements
Candidates must meet the following criteria to apply for the 2019-2020 K-5 Math Endorsement Cohort:

  1. Must have a clear & renewable Georgia Teaching Certificate
  2. Must be employed by a Georgia school system
  3. Must be recommended by District Curriculum Director and School Principal
  4. Must have two (2) letters of recommendation: one from District Curriculum Director and one from School Principal
  5. Must have two (2) years of successful teaching experience
  6. Must be committed to completing the program

Culminating Assessment
Unit of Instruction Pedagogy in Mathematics/Understanding Number and and Operations Syllabus (Appendix D).

Authentic Residency

25 hours embedded throughout the four courses and completed in the candidate’s teaching assignment or outside of school hours

The Authentic Residency requires the K – 5 Mathematics Endorsement candidates to participate in a supervised and coordinated series of real applications of knowledge and skills occurring in actual classroom settings that allow candidates to further develop and demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired in coursework. Candidates will demonstrate their ability to: 

= apply content knowledge and pedagogical skills delineated in program content standards,

= work with diverse students and with students in the grade levels of the candidate’s base 
  certificate, and

= work with students at grade levels of base certificate.

Culminating Assessment: Portfolio, Authentic Residency Requirement Documentation

If you choose DISTRICT/SYSTEM PAY as your payment method, the district must submit a system check to pay for the class. Please make payable to Oconee RESA and send to address below.

Withdrawal/Cancellation Policy
Notification of cancellation for any course must be received prior to the registration deadline. Registration fees are refundable only if cancellation is received before the registration deadline. Withdrawals/Cancellations received after the registration deadline will not be accepted and fees will not be refundable.
