You will need a cane for the VIE 4 Introduction to Orientation and Mobility in June.  You may get your cane from any distributor, but the suggested requirements are that you get a 4-piece folding aluminum cane with a traditional rubber grip and a hook-on rolling marshmallow tip.

We have talked with Maxi-Aids and they carry these canes in stock. If you choose to order from Maxi-Aids, you can call them at 800-522-6294 and use Customer Service to place your order (Monday-Friday, 8:30-5:30).  The 4-piece folding aluminum cane with a traditional rubber grip has a stock number that begins with 14848.  (The remaining digits depend on the desired length of the cane.)  Your instructor recommends requesting a hook-on rolling marshmallow tip, unless you have another preference.

TO DETERMINE LENGTH OF CANE:  Length in inches or centimeters from lower tip of sternum (xiphoid process) to the floor. (For example, a person who is 5’6” may measure 47 inches from the lower tip of the sternum to the floor.) If this is confusing, cane users can measure the distance from the armpit to the floor and subtract about 3 inches.  NOTE:  Canes are sold in 2-inch increments, so you will want to round up to the next even number.

You are not required to purchase a cane if you already have access to a suitable cane. It is important that the cane be of an appropriate length for your height.
