Course Description

DO THE “RIGHT” THING ~EQUALITY’S CALL:

The Story of Voting Rights in America~ Integrating Literacy & Inquiry Into Social Studies (Grades 6-12)

Election season provides a great opportunity to teach students how our government works and why it is important to understand our voting rights. During this online facilitated session, we will explore the history of voting rights, as we commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the 15th Amendment, the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, and the 55th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. Through the use of content integration, we will examine texts, resources, and inquiry stations that will reinforce your literacy instruction, as you plan to expand your students’ understandings of the importance of elections, voting rights, and forming their own opinions in order to promote civic action and civic engagement.

Recommended Audience:

Middle and High School ELA and SS Teachers; Inclusion Teachers, and Instructional Coaches
