Representative Liana Cassar (D) was first elected to represent District 66 in Barrington and East Providence in November 2018. She is a member of the House Health and Human Services Committee and the House Small Business Committee.

In 2021, a program she'd championed in the legislature two years earlier was included in the state budget, establishing a pilot program that will leverage federal dollars to address chronic homelessness by developing and providing permanent supportive housing.

Additionally, Representative Cassar successfully championed the enactment of a new law that will make perinatal doula services eligible for reimbursement through private insurance. The passage of the perinatal doula reimbursement legislation helps Rhode Island lead the way in addressing racial disparities in health outcomes for parents and infants.

Representative Cassar has sponsored bills to expand Rhode Island's successful paid family leave program and codify the protections of the Affordable Care Act in state law. She is the House sponsor of the Equality in Abortion Coverage Act, which would assure that the rights codified in the Reproductive Privacy Act would extend to all Rhode Islanders, regardless of a person's health insurance. She has worked on health issues for a variety of communities in the health care and public health sectors in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, including veterans, low-income communities and women. She has additionally worked in the healthcare IT sector, supporting health systems with technology integration and performance. Early in her career she served in the Peace Corps as a community development worker in Costa Rica.

She is a graduate of John Jay High School in Katonah, N.Y., and holds a Master's degree in public health from Boston University, an MBA from Simmons College, and bachelor's degrees in communications and Spanish from University of Connecticut.

Representative Cassar runs a strategy and operations consulting business, working with mission-driven and women-led organizations and creating content pertaining to the care economy. She also serves as a coach for the business incubator program at Social Enterprise Greenhouse.

She serves as co-chair of the Barrington Democratic Town Committee and is currently an advisory board member for the Center for Health and Justice Transformation. She and her family live in Barrington.
