Bio

Senator Joe Morrissey was born in Washington, D.C. on September 23, 1957. He received his bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Economics from the University of Virginia. Senator Morrissey went on to receive his Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University and his Master of Law degree at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.

​Senator Morrissey was elected the City of Richmond's Commonwealth's Attorney in 1989 and served in that role until 1993. Upon leaving his role as Commonwealth's Attorney in Richmond, Senator Morrissey practiced law as a criminal defense attorney until 2018.

Senator Morrissey served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2008 until 2015 and was elected the State Senator representing the 16th Senatorial District in November 2019.

Joe proudly represents District 16 in the Virginia State Senate. District 16 encompasses the City of Richmond (part), the City of Hopewell (all), the City of Petersburg (all), Chesterfield County (part), Prince George County (part), and Dinwiddie County (part).
