Bio

Before he was a state representative, Tyson RunningWolf was an outdoor guide.

RunningWolf started going on pack trips in the Bob Marshall Wilderness with his grandfather when he was 16 years old and became a professional guide for renowned wrangler Smoke Elser when he was 21.

He graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in forestry in 2001, and he has been practicing Native culture ever since.

RunningWolf is a leader of the Horn Society, a spiritual group that keeps holy knowledge, he regularly holds sweats, or traditional cleansing ceremonies, and attends medicine pipe dances and other ceremonies.

Though RunningWolf, now 45 years old, only leads occasional pack trips, he devotes his life to protecting land and values sacred to the Blackfeet Nation - not as an outdoor guide, but as a state representative. RunningWolf's wife, Lona, is an educator.

In 2017, people approached RunningWolf asking whether he had considered running for a state representative position. He hadn't. But RunningWolf was intrigued by the idea. As he thought more about it, he grew excited about helping his community as a legislator.

RunningWolf, member of the Blackfeet Nation, ran as a democrat for state representative in 2018 and won.
