Overview

THIS IS AN ENCORE PRESENTATIN OF THE WEBINAR ON APRIL 20. DO NOT REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT IF YOU ARE ALREADY REGISTERED FOR THE WEBINAR ON APRIL 20.

This training will focus on working specifically with LGBTQA+ victims including, but not limited to, the recent uptick in violence affecting this community and increasing gender-identity competency while providing crime victim services.

Presenter
Kelly Burkhardt (she/her/hers)
LGBTQ+ Liaison & Victim Witness Coordinator
Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office

Kelly Burkhardt serves as the LGBTQ+ Liaison and Victim Witness Coordinator for the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office since 2018. Trained in trauma-informed care, she directly assists LGBTQIA+ victims, survivors and their families. The focus of her work is guiding these individuals through the complexities of the criminal justice system, as well as building trustworthy relationships with community stakeholders, law enforcement, support agencies and government entities. Kelly possesses over 20 years of experience as a grassroots activist, advocate, and community organizer in Philadelphia's LGBTQIA+, and BIPOC communities including anti-gun violence efforts where her experience and skills provide direct connections to resources for queer and transgender/gender-diverse individuals. Ms. Burkhardt works to create data-driven initiatives and expand programs dedicated to LGBTQIA+ individuals and their families who have been traumatized by violence. Kelly is also partaking in a national research project on hate crimes, Improving Strategies for Investigating and Prosecuting Hate Crimes: A National Yet Local Approach, that is being conducted by Florida International University and is funded by the US Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice.  Additionally, she spearheads sexual orientation and gender-identity competency trainings for all DAO staff, advocates, educators and students. Kelly is certified in Crisis Response, Trauma-Informed Death Notifications, Addiction and a Mandated Reporter in PA. She stays rooted in community as she proudly sits on the Board of Directors of William Way LGBT Community Center and the Police LGBTQ Liaison Committee. In 2022, Kelly joined the external advisory board for Jefferson University’s Center for Injury, Research & Prevention, which aims to thoughtfully study violence that affects LGBTQIA+ community members.
