Course Description

This professional development is designed to enhance teachers' knowledge and skill so they can effectively teach grammar in context. Teaching grammar in context involves showing powerful models like sentences within mentor texts, rather than marking errors and correcting weak or wrong examples. Using model sentences from mentor texts teaches students to focus on what is effective in a piece of writing and then to give it a try in their own writing.

Using models to teach written conventions in context is closely linked to teaching students to notice author's style or craft. Students begin to notice how different authors use language and conventions to make their writing "work" and come alive for the reader.  Teaching written conventions does not involve "hunting" for errors. It does facilitate student thinking and their own development as writers.  Students learn to experiment in their own writing to try what they notice other authors doing with language and conventions.

Participants will have the opportunity to outline their GSE Grammar and Convention Standards to create a lesson sequence (Unit plans) for upcoming lesson plans.  Come discover brain-based, practical ways to use the reading/writing connection to teach grammar and editing in a way that grows young writers and readers.

Participants will understand how to use mentor sentences to teach....
-literary and rhetorical devices
-common grammar skills and language conventions
-students how to revise and edit their compositions after modeling the connections between mentor sentences, the writing process, and author's craft
-students how to think conscientiously about purposeful revision and editing
-students that with mentor sentences, we are exposing students to amazing craft with correct structure and mechanics, and helping them use those models to become student-authors

Transform your traditional teaching into integrated practices, see the students make that ever-important transfer to writing, and incorporate higher-order thinking into grammar!
