Course Description

What is a makerspace? Let’s spend the day together exploring our understandings and wonderings about this word.  We’ll use texts, tools, expertise, and experiences to get a better understanding for why maker education is important and what it looks like in a school setting.

What happens in a makerspace? We’ll look at the kinds of things that happen in a makerspace and consider the balance between open exploration and standards-based projects.

Being a Maker: It’s hard to envision a makerspace without taking time to be a maker yourself. We’ll spend a large portion of time exploring multiple maker tools from low tech to high tech. Robotics, 3D design, littlebits, duct tape, cardboard, origami, and more will be on our agenda for tinkering, designing, and sharing. As we discover how each tool works, we’ll think about the types of projects that could be created with multiple types of learners.

Design challenges & problem-based learning: How can we tackle authentic problems in our schools and communities through our makerspaces? How can we offer some structure to maker experiences while also giving learners the freedom to dream and create. We’ll try out a few ideas together.

Funding & Organization: Even with a limited budget, makerspaces can still exist. We’ll look at ways makerspaces are funded and how to keep things organized along the way.

Collaboration: How do we work together as educators and community to bring maker experiences to our learners?

If you have a favorite maker tool or activity already, feel free to bring it along. We’ll weave it into our day. Come ready to dive into making.

Lunch will be provided.

Please bring a laptop or tablet to this session.
