The Georgia General Assembly passed legislation which is very supportive of and offers incentives to teachers who choose to become National Board Certified. The 2000 session of the Georgia Legislature, as part of the A Plus Education Reform Act of 2000, increased rewards for National Board Certified Teachers to a 10% increase in salary as well as reimbursement for the certification fee. PAGE lobbyists worked with legislators and the Governor's Office to pass this legislation. The 2001 session included funding to pay for the application fee up front for many teachers.
In 1998, PAGE was successful in passing legislation that grants teachers two days of approved paid leave to prepare the portfolio of student work. A copy of this legislation can be found here. The Georgia Professional Standards Commission has established certification rules that allow Georgia teachers achieving National Board Certification a clear renewable certificate for the 10 year life of the certificate or 2 five-year cycles.
