Staff Analysis of the Legislation

SUMMARY:  LC 29 6518S  An attempt to resolve conflict between the passage last session of HB 60 and HB 826 as to weapons in schools.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • amends the Juvenile Code to provide that possession of  "minor" violations of weapons in school safety zones are not to be considered Class B designated felonies
  • school employees would not be required to report such possession unless it involves a firearm, dangerous weapon or machine gun, or weapon of any kind used together with an assault. 

EFFECTIVE DATE:  July 1, 2015 if approved by the General Assembly and Governor.
