Class Notes

Formative Assessment is a process used by teachers as a part of intentional instruction and assessment that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve students' achievement of core content.  As assessment for learning, formative assessment practices provide students with clear learning targets, examples and models of strong and weak work, criteria for success, regular feedback, and the ability to self-assess, tract learning, and set goals.

For classroom formative assessment practices to both motivate students and increase student achievement, students need to know the learning target, know where they are at in regards to the learning target, and know what they can do to close the gap based on established criteria for success and feedback provided by the teacher.

In this workshop, participants will:
(1)  establish learning targets for standards to be taught.
(2)  establish success criteria based on learning targets.
(3)  develop formative assessments that support success criteria.
(4)  analyze formative assessments.

(5)  practice providing feedback on formative assessments related to success criteria.

(5)  establish next steps based on formative assessment data.
