Bio

Rosa Underwood Gill is a Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly. She was appointed to represent the 33rd House District - Wake County, by the former Governor Beverly Perdue in June 2009 after Representative Dan Blue, Jr. was appointed to complete the unexpired term of the late Senator Vernon Malone. She is currently serving her third two-year term as a representative. Representative Rosa Gill, a lifelong resident of Wake County, was born and grew up in rural Western Wake County in a family of thirteen siblings. She knows and understands the value of family, faith, hard work, service and education. She is a product of the Wake County Public School System and a graduate of Shaw University. Rosa is a retired state employee (23 years as an educator and 10 years as the Director of Traffic Records with the Division of Motor Vehicles). She taught mathematics at Garner High School and Enloe Magnet High School. While at Shaw University, Rosa began her political involvement by participating in the civil rights movement of the sixties. She helped elect the first African American Wake County Commissioner and worked on many other campaigns to elect public officials at all levels of government. Prior to being appointed to the North Carolina General Assembly, she served as chair of the Wake County Democratic Party, the Wake County Board of Elections and the Wake County Board of Education. Rosa was first elected to the Wake County Board of Education in 1999 and re-elected in 2003 and 2007. As a former educator and a member of the Wake County School Board, Rosa continues to lead the fight to ensure that all children have access to a great education and that our teachers are treated and respected as professionals. She knows the value of highly qualified teachers and a good education. She also understands the vital role public education play in creating a well trained workforce that will help recruit and retain new businesses. Representative Rosa Gill will continue to fight for legislation that will invest in our public education systems, strengthen our economy by creating high paying jobs and providing training for the newly created jobs, investing in small business, protecting our environment and fighting injustices. Representative Gill is a member of Democratic leadership team serving as Democratic Minority Whip and chair of the Democratic House Education Workgroup. She is actively involved in numerous civic, social, community and political organizations within her community. She is the former NC State Director of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. She is a member of Macedonia New Life Church. Rosa is married to Jimmie Gill and they have two daughters and two adorable grandchildren.
